If Salvador Dali was alive today he would have turned 107 years old. This infamous surrealist is one of my favorite artists of all time and a great inspiration to my life and so I want to wish him a very happy birthday!
I fell in love with Dali back in High School when I had to write a paper dissecting his most famous piece of art - “The Persistence of Memory” for my junior year honors English class. I remember staring at this iconic piece, trying to figure out what it all meant, without the help of any books in the library (this was before the internet was mainstream). I ended up writing something about existence of reality in dreams, but it made me hungry to find out more about Dali himself. I studied his life for a media class in College (where I had a dial-up internet connection) and discovered much of his work is simply his view of human existence.
Dali’s life and artwork provides students and teachers a great showcase for discussion topics and creating writing assignments (see the Collaborize Classroom resources pages for ideas), thus inspiring a whole new generation of students.
Last October I had the chance to visit The Museum of Modern Art in New York city and see my favorite piece of art in person. Needless to say, it was an amazing experience.
