"From the moment I integrated Collaborize into my classroom curriculum, discussions have taken on a whole new significance. Student responses contain a depth and quality that I am not able to get from real-time classroom conversation. It is a wonderful tool that is making my experience as an instructor even more rewarding."
– Mrs. Catlin Tucker, Honors English Teacher,
Windsor High School

Yes, all Collaborize Classroom sites are secure via a password-protected sign-in process that is only known by you and your students (and those that you invite to join the site). None of your classroom data or information can be viewed online without a password and special access to your site.
Collaborize Classroom is a free online learning platform that allows your students to engage in meaningful conversations related to your curriculum, ask and answer questions, collaborate on projects, vote on issues/ideas, and see tangible results. Teachers can continue valuable discussions, facilitate online learning groups, encourage the sharing of resources, and provide students with a safe space to engage in collaborative learning. Collaborize Classroom provides endless possibilities for blended learning that will result in a richer, more meaningful educational experience for each student. Blended learning refers to the use of multiple learning environments in conjunction with one another. In this case, Collaborize Classroom is an online learning platform aimed at complimenting traditional in-class instruction to achieve optimal engagement, comprehension and retention of information.
Unlike other online learning platforms that offer an overwhelming amount of features, Collaborize Classroom is straightforward, clear, and easy to implement. Because it is a web-based application, it does not need to be downloaded or installed on your computer. It is easily accessed via your own personal URL. It is designed to support a classroom teacher by providing an online learning forum that builds on classroom curriculum. Its simplicity makes it easy to navigate for both teachers and students. Instead of inundating the teacher and students with a multitude of features, many of which will never be used, Collaborize Classroom is based on the simple question-answer-result design. You can pose questions of various types, including Yes/No, Multiple Choice, Vote or Suggest, and Forum. The results of each discussion can then be published to the results page so students can see the tangible outcomes of their conversations.
- Attachments: Teachers can attach photos, videos, PDFs and Microsoft® Office documents with their questions to cut down on the need for unnecessary copies. Students can read or view the attached content, then respond to the question(s).
- Messaging: Teachers can easily message any of their students via the built in messaging system. This allows for quick and easy communication. Students can also message the teacher to ask questions or seek clarification.
- Participation Reports: Teachers can view and print participation reports that track each student’s activity on the online learning platform (i.e. number of logins, votes, comments, replies, etc.). This is a timesaving tool that makes grading participation on the classroom site easy!
- Activity Reports: Daily activity reports are sent to the teacher's email for review.
- Watch List: Teachers can select key discussions to follow more closely.
- Support Tutorials: Teachers can view helpful tutorials, like "How To Start An Online Discussion," that will support them as they establish their online site.
That is the beauty of the Collaborize Classroom design! The question-answer-result format makes this online learning platform versatile. English teachers can facilitate discussions and literature circles; science teachers can allow lab groups to collaborate on experiments conducted in class; foreign language teachers can create a venue for students to practice their language skills with online dialog and question/answer drills; history teachers can incorporate current events into their curriculum for discussion. Its simplicity provides infinite possibilities for blended learning.
Establishing clear expectations for both the quality of postings as well as the tone of online interactions is crucial to creating and maintaining a safe space. As the moderator of your Collaborize Classroom site, you will be able to clearly communicate your expectations on the announcement banner, remove postings that you feel are not constructive or appropriate, message students directly to discuss online interactions and use control settings to limit types of postings and messages. For more on these topics, visit our Support page and check out resources like 'Say Something Substantial' and 'Do's and Don'ts for Student Forums.'
